Pavai - Centre for Puppetry
Pavai - Centre for Puppetry is a charitable trust (Reg
No.1199 - 2005) dedicated to the art of puppetry and its
usage in communication. Puppetry is a performing art form
in India with rich cultural heritage. In the past,
traditional puppet shows were used to convey religious
messages in villages. Today, due to the influence of modern
communication methods, the traditional puppetry is at the
cross roads in many states of India with most puppeteers
taking to alternate source of livelihood. However,
contemporary puppetry has a tremendous scope in the field
of education, entertainment and awareness generation.
Pavai explores and uses the art of puppetry for
communication at various levels and works towards its
promotion and preservation with the help of children, youth
and the teaching community.
Pavai hopes to achieve its goal through regular puppetry
classes in schools, initiating puppetry clubs, workshops
during summer and winter holidays, puppet theatre
production at amateur and professional levels, teacher
training programmes, preparation of puppetry resources and
kits, exhibitions for awareness generation, publication of
newsletter and books dedicated to the art of puppetry and
promotion and preservation of traditional puppetry and
puppeteers.
Pavai is managed by its chairperson and managing trustee,
Dr. R.Bhanumathi. An environment educationist by
profession, she has experience in the art of puppetry
spanning over two decades. She has done her PhD on the
status of traditional shadow puppetry and puppeteers of
South India.
